About Edinburgh

Edinburgh, the capital of Scotland is built on a number of hills and has over many centuries grown around Edinburgh Castle, spreading out initially from the fortified walled Old Town in the heart of the city, to the Georgian “New Town”. Further expansions and developments over many centuries have brought about this vibrant modern city.

Edinburgh is well known and proud of its history, heritage and the architecture which has been retained throughout all its changes. This combined with its natural beauty has resulted in both the Old Town and New Town being recognised as World Heritage Sites.

As the city centre is so compact, it is full of fascinating places with historical significance, most of which are within short walking distances of each other and these are able to be seen by the discerning traveller.

Edinburgh Castle, in the centre of town, houses the Scottish Crown Jewels and the Stone of Destiny, as well as displaying many items of historical interest. From its position high on Castlehill, Edinburgh Castle has agnificent views over the City and the surrounding countryside. The shores of the Forth Estuary and the Port of Leith lie to the north and moored here is the former Royal Yacht “Britannia”.

During August there are numerous Festivals / Events ongoing including the Fringe, International Festival of Music and Drama, the Jazz Festival, Book Festival and Mela Festival. The world famous Edinburgh Military Tattoo is held on the Castle Esplanade which is transformed by the building of temporary stands to accommodate the thousands of visitors wishing to see this magnificent spectacle. Indeed, throughout the year, the City is home to numerous other Festivals,Art Collections, Exhibitions, Galleries and Museums.

Thousands of people now enjoy the festivities leading up to Christmas and Hogmanay, where over many days visitors along with Edinburgh residents celebrate with events and street parties. There are Botanic Gardens, a Zoo and a wide selection of restaurants, theatres, shops and entertainments to be visited. The choice is yours, to do what you want, when you want and how you want.
